What Is Chronic Kidney Disease: Approach 1

NARRATOR:A doctor speaks with a patient in his office. PATIENT: What is CKD? DOCTOR: CKD means chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease means
that the kidneys are damaged. The most common causes of chronic kidney
disease are diabetes and high blood pressure. People who have diabetes and high blood
pressure have chronic kidney disease because the small blood vessels in
the kidney are damaged in such a way that the kidney can no longer
filter as well as it should. The damage tends to occur very slowly
and most people have no symptoms. They don’t feel any way until the
kidney damage is very advanced. If the kidney damage progresses over time, the
kidneys could be unable to maintain the health of the individual with kidney disease.>>Okay.
