What Is an Anal Fistula?

An anal fistula is related
to an abscess in the anal area. The abscess goes
unchecked and it actually connects from the anal canal all
the way out to the anal skin. Just like you can get a pimple
on your face from a gland, we have glands in the anal area,
and those glands get infected and the infection
actually reaches out to the outside part
of the skin and it causes a physical connection. And unfortunately, anal fistulas
are only treated surgically, there’s no antibiotic
or medicine that will make them better. Symptoms of a fistula are
very common from anal issues– pain, bleeding,
pressure– so that’s why it’s very commonly
mistaken for a hemorrhoid or something to that
effect, because most issues in the anal area
have all similar symptoms.
