Stop The Bleed program

[MUSIC PLAYING] The Stop the Bleed program
is a well-conceived program that empowers the
non-medical citizen to intervene and help a patient
who’s bleeding to death. [MUSIC PLAYING] The campaign comes out of the
American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. A group within the Committee,
on Trauma of the Hartford Consensus, it was decided that
after the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut, where a number
of elementary school children were killed, that there
had to be a better way to approach this problem. The technique is simple. Once you have assured
your own safety, once you have called
for help– such as 911– and you see someone who’s
bleeding excessively, using your two hands and
anything available to you, simply lean on the bleeding
hard enough to make it stop. This training is simple
and straightforward. You can undergo this
training probably in no more than 20 to 30 minutes
for a group of 30 or 40 people. And it’s something that people
can do quickly and easily once they realize
what to do and that’s they’re not going
to hurt the victim but may actually save
the victim’s life. The principal barriers to
people helping people bleeding is they don’t know
what to do and they’re afraid to hurt the patient. This program will
teach you what to do and will re-emphasize
that you’re not going to hurt the
patient in the process. [MUSIC PLAYING]
